Default Experience with scanners

Has anyone had any experience with BMW specific scan tool packages such as the Schwaben scan tool from ECS or the kit from Bavarian Technic?

I've got a 2011 328i which ran out of warranty last year and I want to be ready when something happens. I know that I can cobble together a solution from downloaded software and an eBay cable, but I'm a old "gearhead" not a computer geek so a turnkey solution is better for me.

Anyone tried either of those tools?
