Default Opinion sought on Fault code assessment (e91/N43)

Hi,

I hope you can help me to assess the error codes which I have obtained using INPA and a diagnostic cable. I'd like to understand what they could mean (See my summary assessment from code lookup below) and determine an order of work. My preliminary conclusion is that I must investigate the reason for cylinder 2 misfire and likely change a thermostat. Not sure what to make of the crankshaft or other errors. What do you guys think?

I have an e91 2008 with an N43 2 litre engine.

Erm thanks..... however my instinct is that a small problem is more likely than a catastrophic. So I've now done a better job googling around that problem.

"The 2a99 code is for "exhaust camshaft correlation" and this code sets when the camshaft is not in the correct position due to a timing issue. The most common cause is a problem with the VANOS system caused by a faulty VANOS solenoid valve"

I don't want to get ahead of myself and say the above is "more than likely", but it is where I will start.

Hi there,

My Dad has a 2007 120i with the N43 engine.

Today the MIL light came on and the engine would run very rough at idle, hunting around. It sorted itself out after a few miles and then ran normally. Rebooting it seemed fine again with no MIL light.

I read the codes and it also has a 10905 code - crank and exhaust cam out of sync.

Having researched I think it is either the exhaust cam sensor or the exhaust cam VANOS solenoid.

I will see if and when the fault repeats itself and then possibly swap the VANOS solenoids over between inlet and exhaust if this is possible - I could not find them on realoem.

Out of interest, I found on a german forum someone was having the same issue with a 335i. The dealer "flushed" the VANOS according to this thread which is an option in the diagnostics....

Apologies if an expert points out the below is not 100% accurate. This however is my take.

*With your error code alone I would change the exhaust vanos solenoid*
- Test if this is at fault by swapping the intake and exhaust vanos solenoids around to see if the fault code follows.

Unfortunately it transpires that the N43 engine is a pig. It's overall relative low torque design is bad as a result of poor original efficient dynamics software combined with poor original injectors creating a cascade of problems. In addition it is very important that exactly the right BMW engine oil is used. If you are unsure of the heritage of that in your car you should probably change it.

It seems that there is an interplay between the ECU and the coils and plugs whilst the ECU attempts to correct the problems it perceives. This baseline problem appears to be injectors attempting to run too leanly under the original car software. As a result coils and plugs can fail as the system tries to compensate, and the injectors probably need changing too if they have not already been changed. The engine software needs flashing to the latest and at a push I think cylinder heads even need cleaning. There has never been a major recall of faults with this engine which internet uproar would suggest there probably should have been.

After replacing a vanos solenoid and a coil pack on my car I was annoyed to discover my low rpm hesitation issues had not gone away. I then discovered there was a bmw recall, or "product enhancement" on the coils only, and took it in to get all the coils changed. They offered to do a diagnostic for £100 which I agreed to (Since I already had system fault codes to hand I figured I could get real value from a between the lines assessment given the dialogue I could have). They updated the car software for me FOC and it now runs… for the moment at least… flawlessly
