Default Programing power supply

Hello. Why it's necessary to provide as much current for programming (eg 50 amps)? When all accessories are turned off, the car itself shouldn't take so much current. Battery can drain many ams, but it can be disconnected leaving car only supply powered. Why everyone is leaving the battery connected to the car?
