Default Solderless Used Cluster Swap - Possible?

Scenario: Upgrading from a low density cluster to a used high density cluster. The high density cluster is out of a 2002 going into a 2000.

Since PA Soft has issues with the m35080 chip, I'd like to take the direct approach.

There's a tool out there usually referred to as the "BMW M35080 programmer" or "BMW Mileage programmer" that I'm thinking about getting.

Most videos such as this one show a person gently laying a removed Chip on the programmer. See [Only for registered users... ]

I'm not a fan of soldering. I'm thinking a SOIC 8 pin clip work?
The eSmelecom DataSmart 3+ (a $4000 tool) is shown in this video using a SOIC 8 pin clip directly on the cluster.
See [Only for registered users... ]

The ribbon cable in the picture isn't used in the videos and I'm thinking the clip might work there.

Has anyone done this? If so, what was your experience? Tips on the pin outs would be appreciated.

If any of the above information in incorrect, please let me know (nicely!).
