Default 2009 X5 rear hatch won't open

I just moved to Atlanta and packed my X5 too full! I can't get rear hatch to open. I have removed all of the stuff I piled in it from the back seats but it won't open. I hear the motor run and pull the hatch in a little but it won't release. Is there a release that I can get to to get it working again?
