Default 535XI Overheating

Vehicle is a 535XI with 145K miles. While driving around town with an outside air temperature of 75 F the “engine overheating” warning lamp illuminated. I immediately pulled over and shut off the engine. After waiting 30 minutes for engine to cool I re-started the engine. The warning lamp did not re-illuminate but the cooling fan was running faster and making a very noticeable high whining noise. Coolant fluid level was normal.
Could a faulty thermostat cause this issue or is this definitely a water pump replacement. Any input is appreciated.

Thank you

Yes it can. You might even have a code for thermostat issues.
