Default CCC burnt out. Used one in hand options?

My CCC has take a crap. I have done all of the diagnostics. And itís officially toast. I just got a used working one ( I seen it work before I bought it) my question is...

Does this used one need to be coded to my car OR/AND programmed? Everything Iíve seen online points me to coding but I feel like thatís too easy to make it work. I have a protool cable on the way and was planning on using NCS expert to code it? Am I on the right track or should i send it out to be programmed?
