Angry The e46 that refuses to be read

Hi all,

Im new to the forum hoping for some expert help :

I have a 2000plate bmw 316 1.9l
Ive located the obdII port and plugged my generic obdII elm reader into it however it gets as far as vehicle data bus okay then it says no response from car! :@
I have tried several different software and still the same problem.
I don't have the round connection under the bonnet well atleast i can't find it! :/
Any help much appreciated

Is there a 20 pin round diagnosis plug under the hood?
The cap has to be screwed on for the obd2 plug to work.
If not,please disregard.

the best way is k-line cable you find it very cheap in ebay and research forum to get inpa soft and modiefied cable.
