Default Very high emissions on mot test

Hi Just had my 320i , 2007 with n43 engine fail the mot test on CO emissions of 4.5% and HC of 240.
No engine management light came on and the check engine function said ok!

Have been told it is down to the mass air flow sensor and that the NOX sensor was showing on the diagnostics check. Also that the NOX sensor will require the car to be run for 20 minutes at a constant speed to set up via computer??

I would of thought that either of these would of caused an engine management light or fail on the check engine function.
Has anyone else experienced this?
