Default What cable to buy e46 318i -99

Hi!

Let me start of by apologising if this has been covered before, I have tried to find the info here on the forum but without any luck.

So to the question, I own a bmw 318i e46 (Europe), it has both the obd2 plug under the steering wheel and the round connector in the engine bay. The car is running fine without any faults as far as I know, I would like to be able to access it through both the plugs. As I have understood basically you can't do much at all through the obd2 on my bmw just basic monitoring.

Therefore if I have understood it all correctly I need both a round adapter and a obd2 to usb plug to be able to to diagnostics and maybe even coding if I understand that in the future. Now the question is what kind of cable do i need to be most versatile.Oh and the computer i am using is a Win7 64bit.

One thing with the OBD2 reader, it will only be able to read and reset generic codes on the BMW. If you want to be able to read the BMW codes and do more in depth diagnostics like reset an airbag code, reset the service lights you need a BMW specific cable. Today obd2 comes with bluetooth, this cable is used to read diagnostic trouble codes.

You need an ADS unit for both 20pin and USB OBD.

This one looks like exaktly what I need, only problem if Im not mistaken the one linked to is for serial cable, I would need one with usb :/
Would a proper usb to serial adapter solve this problem?
Also with the above cables would I be able to access everything right? :)

You cannot used serial to usb.

you must use native serial adapter with ads unit.

I am hoping to find a way to connect it without a serial port since i can't get hold of a computer with such a port.
I can't see why not a correctly built serial port wont work tho.
Anyway if any of you guys find a good tool for both the abd2 and 20pin round connector that works with a good program plz give me a shout.

Checking my 20 pin plug I now see that i dont have the ADS pin (pin15),
Therefore if i understand all correctly a combiination of these two should work on usb with impa for my car [Only for registered users... ] and [Only for registered users... ]

Also i found this one on ebay promising to do the same as the above two combined, do you guys think it might work? [Only for registered users... ]
