Default Early e36

OK I have searched and it seems I cannot connect to my e36 without an OBD/ADS interface with a rs232 serial cable. At least without a rs2323 port; as on my laptop (dell vostro 1310.) Is it possible to use a PCMCIA to rs232 adapter without pissing off EDIBAS. If not, what should I search for?
