Default INPA & cable for 2011 328i

Hey everyone,

I own a 2011 BMW 328i. I've been working on cars for years but this is my 1st BMW. I recently replaced the battery and I am having issues with excessive discharge/low voltage. I know I need to register the new battery (and change the capacity size) but I am a bit confused on what to get for a cable. I bought one from Amazon that did not work K+Dcan (USB). I do have an old Dell D400 with XP and a serial port. Can I use a serial cable version VAG-COM on my car? Can some one please let me know which one to get? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Rick
