You need ISTA P with ICOM or E SYS. Both are thousands.

Thanks for the info. This is all brand new to me.

So even with a D-CAN Cable, the "readily available" programs floating around out there such as NCS, EDIABAS, INPA, PROGMAN SSS, WinKFP, BMW DIS, etc. will be of no use to me?

You need ICOM or ENET cable + ICOM emulator and ISTA/P software or Esys.

Sorry to be stupid here, but this is all new. Can you advise:

1) I was going to buy this D-CAN cable:

[Only for registered users... ]

Are you saying that instead of this, I would need an ICOM or ENET cable?

2) What is the ICOM emulator, and is it needed with both the ICOM and ENET Cables, or just with the ENET Cable?

3) Any advantage of ISTA/P versus ESYS?

4) What is the difference between ISTA/D and ISTA/P?

5) What is BMW ICOM A+B+C and do I need it?

6) Is EDIBAS / NCS Expert / DIS / Progman / SSS useless on the newer F Series vehicles?

Thanks for the help.

All Bmw standard tools are useless on new F series.
New ISIS kit was developed for this cars.
Ista D is for diagnostic and Ista P for coding/programming.
Icom is the interface for this kit.

You can ask again if you'd like but the answer will be the same. The current NCSExpert tools & cable will not work with the F series cars.

Thanks. Like I said, this is all new to me, and I am just trying to figure it out.

As for the cable though, it is still not clear to me. I read of others using that very "INPA - Ediabas K+DCAN USB Interface, D-CAN, CAN Cable", specifically with Pin 8 Removed, for F Series BMW Cars. However, as to what software they are using it with and what they are accomplishing, remains unknown to me, which is why I ask. I don't mind buying cables and software, although I just don't want to buy something I can't use. Needless to say, I am still puzzled about the D-CAN cable.

And if anyone can help answering my other questions (2-5), it would be greatly appreciated.

not true, you an use a d-can cable with INPA to diagnose faults, component activation.. you just need the correct .ipo files, but those are not floating around plus they are in german...but for a quick and dirty fault clearing works great. Tons faster than using an ISID.
but to code, yeah e-sys or ista/p. Coding is easy with e-sys
