Default Cruise control not working

I own a 2006 X5 3.0i (E54) and the cruise lights can be turned on with the vehicle parked so I know the steering wheel buttons are a go but once it is up to speed I cannot engage the cruise. I am suspecting the cruise module or wheel sensors??? but not sure where they are located to check it. Any help on this one. Rick
